Motorola said Thursday that it would ally itself with companies including Vodafone Group and NTT DoCoMo to develop Linux-based software to run mobile phones, a move that could present a challenge to Symbian and Microsoft…..The group hopes to cut software development costs and plans to create services that can be used on devices made by different manufacturers.

    • Major stakeholders : Nokia (47.9% control), Sony (13.1%) Ericsson (15.6%), Matsushita Panasonic (10.5%), Siemens (8.4%), Samsung (4.5%).
    • Shipments of Symbian-powered phones have more than doubled for four straight years as the company has made software for 100 different handset models and more than 250 phone companies.
  • MICROSOFT CAMP (Challenger)
    •   Major stakeholders : Microsoft (Windows Mobile platform).
  • LINUX CAMP (New Entrant)
    • Major stakeholders : Motorola, Vodafone, NTT DoCoMo, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Samsung Electronics, and NEC.
